“I am so absolutely in love with our kitchen island counter top STILL. It has proven to be well worth all of the time and effort and research and headaches. It makes me so happy every time I look at it.”

Set in a century old factory building once part of the historic Astor portfolio, this loft renovation transforms an industrial relic into an open, airy home for a young, design savvy family. The clients, a C-suite hospitality executive and a fashion editor who appears regularly on television, wanted a space that supported both their growing family and their love of entertaining. With soaring ceilings, exposed brick, and cast iron columns uncovered during demo, the loft offered incredible bones but required a full gut transformation to meet the needs of modern family life.

  • The biggest challenge was converting the original two bedroom, two bathroom layout into a three bedroom home with two and a half baths. We reimagined the entire floor plan, relocating the kitchen to create a massive sixteen foot island clad in porcelain, coordinating with neighbors above and below to shift building risers, and turning a former storage room into a dramatic powder bath. A new entry hall with hidden storage behind jib doors sets a gallery-like tone at the front of the home, while the preserved brick archways lead to a reoriented primary suite tucked behind an eighteen inch thick wall that provides quiet separation from the main living spaces. Throughout the project, vintage lighting adds historical relevance and texture, balancing the clean, contemporary finishes selected for durability and ease of living.

In the living room, a modular sectional softens the industrial lines of the loft, while the dining area, anchored by rich green chairs and an expandable table, is designed for gathering friends late into the evening. The custom whiskey bar glows with warm amber light while showcasing the client’s collection. Each child’s room was planned for both the present and the future, with layouts that will evolve as they grow. A corner wrapping gallery wall brings movement and personality to the hallway, intentionally allowing the largest walls to remain open for breathing space and future art. The result is classic, open, and airy, a Meatpacking Loft that honors its history while offering a vibrant and welcoming home for a family whose life moves with joyful momentum.
