In the heart of Brooklyn Heights, within the newly reimagined Standish building, we designed a bright, loft-style home for a young professional family whose days balance demanding careers with the joyful chaos of raising two small children. The apartment’s original character, including exposed brick fireplaces and structural columns, provided a naturally airy, industrial backdrop. Our goal was to soften those architectural bones with a calm palette, thoughtful custom work, and warm, natural materials that support both everyday life and a sense of retreat.

Most of the transformation centered on furnishings and bespoke pieces created specifically for the family. The custom living room sectional was designed for deep comfort during movie nights, while a large Moroccan wool rug anchors the space with softness and scale. The dining table, light fixture, and sideboards were also designed in-house to achieve the right proportions for the open floor plan and were carefully navigated on top of the elevator box to reach the apartment. In the multifunctional guest room that also serves as playroom and home office, custom millwork spans the windows to provide storage, workspace, and room for play. Throughout the home, white washed white oak, black stained ash, vintage brown leathers, navy blue velvet, and woven performance textiles create a clean and healthy environment that aligns with the clients’ priority for natural materials and improved indoor air quality.
The apartment celebrates its views, from a glimpse of the Manhattan skyline in the kitchen to the peaceful gardens and historic townhouses seen from the dining and living rooms. Window treatments were selected to highlight the natural light while softening the space’s industrial elements. Playfulness comes through in the children’s rooms, where a cactus print wallpaper and a hot air balloon motif bring whimsy and color. Softness in the dining room was achieved with custom planter boxes and climbing plants that we specified to slowly climb the exposed brick of the fireplace and soften the details and relate to the garden views directly out of the window. Layered artwork completes the home, including a custom piece by Lauren Williams in the primary bedroom, a ceramic work by M. Quan in the living room that reflects the family’s star signs, and a pair of paintings by Kristen Giorgi in the dining room. The final result is classic, aspirational, and clean, offering a warm and welcoming home for a busy family who needed beauty, clarity, and room to grow.
